If you get all your great sports channels through services like http://www.thesportsticket.com/ or the like, then it is a safe bet you have seen your fair share of slam dunks. Ever wonder about the history behind the signature move? In a sport that, let’s face it, is predominantly African-American, would it surprise you to learn that the dunk was, in fact, invented by a Caucasian male by the name of Bob Kurland?
Born on December 23, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, Robert Albert Kurland, or simply “Bob,” was a 7 foot tall basketball center who played for Henry Iba’s Oklahoma A&M Aggies (now Oklahoma State Cowboys) basketball team. Because of his rather large stature, he had no problem reaching up to dunk the ball through the hoop and was often notorious for being able to grab the rim and deflect shots – this was before goaltending penalties were enacted.
Despite his skill and talent for the sport, Kurland would never go on to play in the professional leagues. Instead, he chose to play in more casual venues while pursuing his career as a senior marketing executive. However, the mark he left on the sport and his legacy as the de facto inventor of the slam dunk live on to this very day.
